Common Dental Questions

Here at SpringRock Dental, we believe that well-informed patients are more at ease at their appointments and are able to make better decisions regarding their dental care. Read below for the answers to a few of our most frequently asked questions:

  • Why is it important to visit the dentist regularly?
Many people only visit the dentist if they’re in pain or there’s a problem with their dental health. This is called “crisis treatment.” What you should be aiming for instead of crisis treatment is preventative treatment! It’s cheaper in the long run to visit the dentist twice a year than it is to pay for a major dental procedure once there’s a problem. Also, many dental problems don’t show symptoms until they’ve reached advanced, severe stages. If we can catch these problems earlier, we can treat them more easily and painlessly.
  • Why is flossing important?
Brushing your teeth is important, but your toothbrush isn’t able to reach the areas between the teeth. Bacteria love to hide in these places, causing cavities and tooth decay. This is why it’s so important to floss the bacteria away! Make sure you’re brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. If you’re unsure of the proper way to floss, please ask our dentist to show you. We promise you’ll notice a difference!
  • What is fluoride and why is it important?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods. Most city water contains fluoride, meaning your tap water is already fluoridated. If your drinking water doesn’t contain fluoride, you can find supplements instead. It’s been shown that fluoride strengthens your tooth enamel, making your teeth more resistant to tooth decay and cavities. Make sure that your children are also receiving fluoride, either in their drinking water or their toothpaste.
  • What is gum disease?
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is infection and inflammation of the gums. If gum disease goes untreated, it can spread to the jaw bones, causing bone loss and tooth loss. Also, untreated gum disease has also been linked to stroke, heart disease, respiratory disease and pre-term delivery. It’s important to be aware of the symptoms of gum disease, which include:
    • Red, swollen gums
    • Tender, bleeding gums
    • Loosening teeth
    • Pus around the teeth
    • Chronic bad breath
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to visit SpringRock Dental as soon as possible! The earlier gum disease is caught, the easier it is to treat.
  • Do whitening toothpastes really work?
Whitening toothpastes are great for removing stains from your teeth. However, unlike professional teeth whitening, these toothpastes aren’t able to bleach your actual tooth color. If you’re trying to remove surface stains, whitening toothpastes will do the trick. If you want whiter teeth, please make an appointment for a teeth whitening at SpringRock Dental!
  • Will pregnancy affect my dental health?
Pregnancy gingivitis happens to around 50% of pregnant women. Gingivitis will cause bleeding, swelling, redness, and tenderness in the gum tissues. Pregnancy makes it even more important to visit your dentist regularly in order to make sure your gums and teeth are healthy!
  • I have dentures – Do I still need to visit the dentist?
Yes you do! While dentures mean you no longer need to worry about cavities and tooth decay, there’s a lot more to dental checkups than just teeth. Your dentist will conduct an oral cancer screening, a head and neck exam, and your dentures will be checked to make sure they still fit properly. Regular dental exams are still recommended, even if you wear denture.
