Dental X-Rays

Here at SpringRock Dental, we use a variety of different dental X-Rays in order to help our dentist determine different dental issues. Below is some information on the types of X-Rays we use and how they’re each different:

Different Types Of Dental X-Rays

Intraoral X-Rays are the most common X-Rays used in our office. These X-Rays are able to show our dentist any cavities you may have, as well as assisting us in viewing the roots of your teeth and the jaw bones surrounding the teeth.

There are 3 different types of intraoral X-Rays:

  • Occlusal X-Rays show the full tooth development and placement in the jaw. Each occlusal X-Ray is able to show the entire arch of your teeth in either the lower or upper jaw.
  • Bite Wing X-Rays show the smaller details of both the lower and upper teeth in a certain section of your jaw. Bite wing X-Rays are also useful in the detection of tooth decay hiding between two teeth, or any changes in your bone density caused by periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Periapical X-Rays are used when our dentist needs to view an entire tooth, from the top of the tooth all the way to where the tooth root sits in the jawbone. Periapical X-Rays are able to find problems that may exist in the tooth and its root structure.

Extraoral X-Rays don’t provide the same level of detail as intraoral X-Rays and they focus less on the teeth and more on the jaw and skull. These X-Rays are helpful in detecting any problems that may exist between the jaws and the teeth, can find impacted teeth, and can check on the temporomandibular joint.

Why Does My Dentist Need To Use X-Rays?

Dental X-Rays are helpful in revealing:

  • Cysts or abscesses
  • Bone loss
  • Abnormalities in the tooth roots
  • Tumors, both cancerous and benign
  • Decay that can sometimes hide between teeth
  • Any developmental abnormalities in the teeth
  • Problems that may exist beneath the gum line
