Tooth Infections

Tooth infections (also called abscesses) are extremely painful infections that usually occur between the gums and the teeth or at the root of a tooth.

What Causes A Tooth Infection?

Tooth infections are most often caused by untreated, severe tooth decay. However, bacteria can also enter a broken or damaged tooth causing an infection. If you’re already suffering from periodontal (gum) disease or gingivitis, it’s easier for an infection to develop in the gums.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Tooth Infection?

Below are a few of the most common symptoms of a tooth or gum infection:

  • Fever
  • Swollen glands
  • Pain when you chew
  • Open sores in the mouth or near the gums
  • Redness and swelling of the gums or other tissues in the mouth
  • Bitter taste
  • Your teeth become sensitive to hot or cold temperatures
  • Chronic, foul smelling breath

If your infection goes untreated, your tooth root will eventually die, meaning the pain of the infection will subside. However, this doesn’t mean the infection has gone away. It still has the potential to spread and damage even more tissue until a professional treats it. If you’re experiencing any combination of the above symptoms, it’s crucial that you make an appointment at SpringRock Dental as soon as you can.
