Dental crowns are caps that are used to place over the top of your teeth to restore the shape, size, and/or function of the tooth. Crowns are shaped like your natural teeth and can also enhance the aesthetics of your smile!
There are several reasons why our dentist may recommend a dental crown. These reasons include:
Receiving a crown will take 3 visits to our office. During your first visit, you’ll receive X-Rays and the tooth will be examined and evaluated. If the tooth is decayed or infected, you may need a root canal before a crown can be placed. Our Aurora dentist will discuss a treatment plan with you.
During your second visit, the tooth and its surrounding tissues will be anesthetized. Once you’re numb, your tooth will be filed down on the sides and the top in order for the crown to fit the tooth. Once this is done, a mold will be taken of your tooth. This mold will be sent to a lab to create a custom crown specifically for your tooth. You will then be fitted with a temporary crown, which will protect the tooth until the permanent crown has been created.
Two to three weeks later, your permanent crown should be ready. This will be your last visit to the office, to remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one into place.
