Dental Fillings

Dental fillings can be used to protect a tooth with a dental cavity. The decayed part of the tooth is removed and the cavity is filled back in to keep out the bacteria that can cause infections. Dental fillings can also be used to fix cracked, or broken teeth!

Do I need a filling?

You want to consider getting a filling if you:

  • Have visible chips or cracks in one of your teeth
  • Have a dull pain or ache in a tooth that doesn’t seem to go away
  • Feel sharp pain in a specific tooth when biting down
  • Have dark spots or visible holes in a tooth
  • Experience increased tooth sensitivity to hot and cold

There are several different kinds of fillings. Years ago fillings were made of precious metals, as these metals were able to last for years. There are many newer options now including porcelain, resin compositions and glass ionomer cement, although gold and silver amalgam fillings are also still in use. Our knowledgeable local dentist, in Aurora, CO, can help you decide on which filling is right for you.

What to expect during a dental filling procedure:

  • First, your tooth and the surrounding area will be numbed using a local anesthetic
  • Once you’re numb, a laser or a drill will be used to remove the decay and damaged area of the affected tooth
  • After the tooth has been cleaned of decay, the cavity will be cleaned out to remove any existing bacteria
  • Once clean, the filling material will be applied and a special light is used to help bond the filling material to the tooth
  • Lastly, the material will be trimmed down to the right size and shape and the tooth will be polished
