Oral Cancer Screening

Our local dentist in Aurora, CO will perform an oral cancer screening during your appointments in order to check for any signs of oral cancer or precancerous cells in your mouth. The reason these screenings are performed is to identify any potential risks early on. The earlier oral cancer is caught, the higher the likelihood it can be treated!

Why Do I Need An Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screenings are a good idea for everyone, as catching oral cancer early can improve your chances of beating it. However, it’s an especially important procedure for those who may already be at risk for oral cancer.

Below are a few of the risk factors for contracting oral cancer:

  • Alcohol abuse
  • Any kind of tobacco use – including cigarettes, pipes, cigars, and chewing tobacco
  • A previous diagnosis of oral cancer
  • History of excessive sun exposure

Please feel free to ask our dentist any questions or bring up any concerns regarding oral cancer and your possible risk factors.

What To Expect During An Oral Cancer Screening

During your oral cancer screening, the inside of your mouth will be thoroughly inspected for any color changes (red, white, or brown patches of skin in the mouth), open sores, lumps, bumps, or swelling. Dr. Michael Plous will feel the tissues of your mouth and neck for any abnormalities. In addition to a visual check, other tests may be utilized, including:

  • Rinsing your mouth with blue dye before the cancer-screening exam. This special rinse will cause any abnormal cells in your mouth to turn blue, allowing them to be seen more easily.
  • Shining a special light into your mouth. This light will make the abnormal cells glow white and leave the healthy cells dark.
