Caring for Your Child Following a Dental Procedure

Father and son smilingHaving any type of dental work done can be upsetting for many kids, but the anxiety may persist even after the procedure is over. While this can be a stressful time for your child, there are a few ways for parents and other care-givers to ease a child’s anxiety after a dental procedure has been performed.

Caring for Your Child Following a Dental Procedure

Below are a few post-procedure tips on caring for your child:

  • Have time set aside after the procedure to spend time with your child. It’s important to keep an eye on him or her to ensure safety after a dental procedure. If your child had to undergo anesthesia, he or she may have coordination issues for a few hours after the procedure, and until the numbing wears off, it’s possible for kids to bite their tongues and lips without even realizing it.
  • Plan for a mellow and easy day after the dental procedure. It’s a good idea to put on a fun movie or television show, read a book, or snuggle on the couch with your child. This will allow you to keep an eye on your child and comfort him or her if needed. We know that dental procedures and numbing can be confusing and upsetting to some children.
  • Lastly, make sure that you already have soft foods available that do not require a lot of chewing. Once your child’s numbness has worn off, you can start to offer him or her foods. These foods include jello, applesauce, soup, or pudding. Then you can move on to solid foods.

Here at SpringRock Dental, we want your child to have a safe, calm, and stress-free experience at our dental office. To make an appointment or if you need more information about caring for your child after his or her procedure, please contact our Aurora, Colorado family dental office today.
