Causes Of Bleeding Gums

Causes Of Bleeding Gums If your child has recently been complaining of bleeding gums, you may be concerned. There are a few different causes of bleeding gums in childhood, most of which are benign. However, bleeding gums can also be a sign of gum disease, so it’s important that you know what to keep an eye out for.

Causes Of Bleeding Gums In Childhood

Below are a few of the possible causes of your child’s bleeding gums:

  • Firmer Toothbrush Bristles – Sometimes a new toothbrush can cause damage to your child’s sensitive gum tissue. Make sure that any toothbrush you purchase for your children has soft bristles and that your child knows how to brush gently.
  • Medication Changes – Certain medications can include gum bleeding as a side effect. These medications can cause the gums to be sensitive or inflamed, making them more susceptible to bleeding. If your child has started new medication recently, contact his or her doctor to see if gum sensitivity is a side effect.
  • Flossing Too Roughly – When your child is first learning how to floss on their own, or if he or she has started flossing too roughly, the gums may become irritated and bleed. The gums should toughen up and stop bleeding in about a week if this is the cause of the problem.
  • Gingivitis (Gum Disease) – If you’ve ruled out any other causes, you may want to consider gum disease. A few of the other symptoms of gum disease include swelling, redness, and sensitivity of the gum tissues. If left untreated, gum disease can become more severe and cause more serious issues. It’s important to get treatment immediately for this issue.

If your child’s gums have been bleeding for longer than a week, or if he or she has any of the other signs of gum disease, it’s important that you make an appointment at our office. The earlier gum disease is detected, the better the outcome may be.
