Causes for Gum Recession

Woman's smile with dentist in backgroundWhile many people find gum recession to be a concern because of the negative effect it can have on the aesthetics of their smile, most people don’t realize that gum recession can be the result of dangerous conditions or habits. In order to be in control of your dental health, it’s important that you know the causes and preventions of dental issues.

Common Causes of Gum Recession

Below are a few of the common reasons why your gum tissue may begin to recede:

  • Gum Disease – Gum recession is one of the most common symptoms of gum disease and gingivitis. By the same token, gum disease is a common symptom of gum recession. If your gums begin to recede, gum disease is the first thing to rule out.
  • Genetics – Genetic factors can be a huge reason you suffer from gum recession. If your parents, siblings, or other family members have experienced or are currently experiencing gum disease or other gum problems, it’s important that you’re proactive about gum care.
  • Oral Hygiene – If your oral hygiene habits are insufficient, harmful bacteria may begin to build up along the gum line. If your oral hygiene habits suffer for too long, your gums may start to recede.
  • Aggressive Brushing – Brushing too aggressively along the gum line can lead to gum recession. Use soft-bristled toothbrushes and remember that you don’t need to be aggressive when brushing. Brushing gently will remove plaque without damaging your teeth or gums.
  • Medical Conditions – Lastly, there are certain medical conditions that have been linked to gum recession. These conditions include diabetes, gum disease, pregnancy, or menopause.

Here at SpringRock Dental, we urge you to take gum recession seriously, as it can often be a sign of a larger problem. If your gums are beginning to recede or you’d like to make an appointment for a dental cleaning and a checkup, please contact SpringRock Dental today.
