Causes of & Treatment for Halitosis

Woman breathing into her handHalitosis, or chronic bad breath, can be embarrassing. Some people can become so self-conscious because of halitosis that they may even begin to avoid social situations, even with family and friends. Halitosis is most commonly caused by poor at-home oral hygiene, but it can also be an indication of other dental issues.

Halitosis Causes

Some of the most common causes of halitosis include:

  • Dry mouth, or a lack of saliva production
  • Poor at-home dental hygiene habits
  • Gum disease or periodontitis
  • Plaque, tartar, and food debris buildup in the mouth

If the plaque and food debris in the mouth are not properly brushed and flossed away, they will begin to cause an odor. This will lead to halitosis.

Halitosis Treatment

Halitosis is unpleasant, but it is actually very treatable by a dental professional. Treatment for halitosis will include a professional deep cleaning of the teeth and mouth performed by a professional. This cleaning will eliminate the plaque and bacteria that cause the odor.

Additionally, we will help you learn and understand proper at-home oral hygiene techniques and give you tips on how to avoid halitosis in the future. This also includes a recommendation for an antibacterial mouthwash and toothpaste that can help prevent halitosis.

If you suffer from chronic bad breath and would like to schedule an appointment to discuss your options, please contact SpringRock Dental here at our Aurora, Colorado dental office.
