The Cost of Delaying Your Dental Treatment

Woman with tooth painMany people are known to dismiss minor toothaches or dental issues, especially if they’re on a tight budget. However, when it comes to dental diseases, it’s important to remember that they won’t go away on their own. In fact, dental issues will only worsen. By the time you decide that your pain is bad enough to visit the dentist, a routine dental cavity has now turned into a severe tooth abscess. At the end of the day, you’ve experienced more pain than necessary, had to have your tooth extracted, and paid for a dental restoration or implant.

The above scenario is actually quite common. In fact, people spend millions of dollars every year on dental procedures that could have been avoided if they’d visited the dentist earlier. In addition to the extra financial cost, dental emergencies may force you to miss work, causing more financial strain.

Postponing Dental Procedures

Below are a few upsetting statistics regarding the increased practice of putting off dental treatment:

  • One in three Americans has put off a dental appointment.
  • Of the above one in three, 80% know that the decision to postpone treatment will cost extra in the long run.
  • The instances of people visiting the emergency room for dental problems has risen by 21%.
  • Up to 60% of people with an income of $35,000 or less do not have dental insurance. This will make them even less likely to visit the dentist.

In addition to the damage to your oral health, putting off dental treatment can damage your overall health as well. Untreated dental problems like gum disease and infection are linked to strokes, diabetes, and heart disease.

The best way to avoid painful and expensive dental problems is to practice good oral hygiene habits. This includes brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, and bringing the whole family in for dental cleanings and checkups.
