It’s very common for children (and even some adults!) to feel fear when visiting the dentist. It’s called dentophobia and it’s a very real thing. Dental checkups are important for everyone, but especially for young children who may not be as great at caring for their oral hygiene. Children also have weaker tooth enamel, making their teeth more vulnerable to dental cavities and tooth decay. Because of this, it’s important to help your children avoid or overcome their fear of the dentist’s office.
Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable at Our Office
Below are a few ways you can prevent dentophobia in your children:
Start Young – According to the American Dental Association, you should bring your child in for his or her first dental appointment either by the time their first tooth emerges or by their first birthday. Whichever comes first. The earlier your children start visiting the dentist, the sooner a bond can be forged between your child and our staff.
Stay Positive – When talking about the dentist to your child, make sure you use positive, non-threatening language. Avoid using words like “shot,” or “drill,” and instead let your child know that all the dentist wants to do is count their teeth and make sure they’re clean. There are no shortage of children’s books and television episodes about visiting the dentist. We recommend taking advantage of these materials to let your kids know what to expect before visiting our office.
Let Us Know – Lastly, if your child is experiencing anxiety about his or her trip to the dentist, please call ahead and let us know. There are ways that we can help put your child at ease and make him or her feel at home in our dental office.
