How to Pick the Right Toothpaste for You and Your Family

ToothpasteWalking down the oral health aisle at the drugstore can be overwhelming! There is an incredible amount of variety when it comes to toothpaste, including pastes, gels, flavors, and plenty of promises including healthier teeth, cavity-fighting formulas, and whiter teeth. It can be difficult to know which of these choices are right for you and your family.

Toothpaste Guide

Below is a short guide outlining the different types of toothpaste to help make your decision a little simpler.

  • Fluoride – Fluoride is an important ingredient in any toothpaste you choose, so make sure any toothpaste you choose contains it. Fluoride is a mineral that has been shown to help keep tooth decay and dental cavities away. Fluoride can also strengthen the tooth enamel, making teeth stronger.
  • Tartar Control – If a toothpaste promises tartar control, you should realize that this means that it can only prevent further tartar buildup, not that it can remove any tartar that already exists on the teeth. The only way to eliminate tartar buildup on the teeth is to have a professional dental cleaning.
  • Whitening – “Whitening” toothpaste can help to wash away any stains you may have on your teeth, but it cannot whiten the teeth. In fact, no toothpaste on the market has ever been shown to change the color of your teeth. This can only be achieved through professional whitening options; so don’t expect your toothpaste to be able to magically whiten your smile!

No matter what type of toothpaste you choose, it’s important to make sure that you’re brushing at least twice a day, flossing every day, and visiting SpringRock Dental every six months for a dental cleaning and checkup. This is the best way to make sure your teeth are healthy, clean, and beautiful!
