Before your next business trip or family vacation, you may want to visit SpringRock Dental for a teeth cleaning and an exam. This may seem like a strange suggestion, but the atmospheric changes that occur during plane trips can intensify any existing sensitivity or dental pain that you’re already experiencing.
At our normal atmospheric pressure, our bodies (including bones, organs, and muscles) have equalized external pressure. But when we experience atmospheric extremes such as lower pressure during air travel and higher pressure when scuba diving, you will feel the not-always-pleasant effects of the pressure changes. This is because your body isn’t able to equalize the pressure and you may feel discomfort or pain.
Your maxillary sinus is the body structure that’s most likely to cause pain in the teeth and jaws. This is because the lower walls of the maxillary sinuses are located right next to the back upper teeth. Sinus pain caused by pressure may radiate into the teeth and vice versa. This is called referred pain and it can put a damper on your trip!
Because of this, we recommend that you take care of any dental treatments or procedures before you go on your next plane trip. Taking early action can help save you money and pain and can help you have a more enjoyable trip.
