Your child’s oral surgery is nothing to take lightly, so it’s important to properly plan and prepare in order to avoid any potential complications. Your family dentist here in Aurora, Colorado will provide you with instructions for before and after your child’s procedure. In addition to these instructions, here are more tips to prepare.
Preparing for Your Child’s Oral Surgery
Below are a few things you can do to prepare for before and after your child undergoes oral surgery:
Pick up pain medication – Once your child’s procedure is over, you’ll probably just want to take him or her home to cuddle for the rest of the day. Because of this, it’s a good idea to pick up any medication your child will need beforehand.
Follow any pre-op instructions – Depending on the procedure, your child will probably need to go without food or water for a number of hours before the surgery. Different treatments will have different requirements, so pay close attention to the pre-op instructions provided by our office.
Prepare meals for post-op – Your child will need to stick with soft foods for the first few days after oral surgery. In addition to eating soft foods, your child should also stay away from acidic or spicy food, avoid drinking from straws, and choose healthy drinks like tea, smoothies, and milk instead of juice.
Be aware of the signs of infection – Lastly, it’s important to keep an eye out for infection. If you notice any of the signs (such as redness, swelling, extreme pain, or a fever), it’s vital that you contact our office right away.
