How To Set a Good Oral Hygiene Example For Your Children
Setting up a good at-home oral hygiene for your whole family will create a foundation of good oral health that will stick with your kids for a lifetime! Most children are perceptive enough that “do what I say, not as I do” won’t work for long. They’ll look to you for the example.
Caring for your own dental health will help your children learn how to care for their own.
Setting a Good Example
Below are a few ways to help show your children how to care for their smiles:
- Make it a family routine – We recommend making your oral hygiene routine a family affair. This way, you can make sure your children are brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily, and they can watch you correctly care for your teeth, learning from your example.
- Discuss your mistakes – Don’t hold back from your kids. If you had a particularly bad case of tooth decay or a nasty cavity, tell them about it. Let them know how you could have avoided it. These cautionary tales will decrease the odds that your kids will have to learn the hard way.
- Improve eating habits – Sugar isn’t great for teeth, and we all know it. But again, kids will learn from your example and if you’re sneaking snacks, they may not take the healthy diet speech seriously. Put together a family meal plan and decide to improve eating habits for the whole family.
- Make family dental appointments – Consider making dental appointments for everyone in the family at the same time (check that this is ok with your dentist first). This way, your kids can watch the cleaning and checkup procedure first and know what to expect without feeling anxious.
Learning to take care of oral hygiene begins in early childhood. The earlier you introduce dental care into your child’s life, the more naturally it will come to them.
