Men and Dental Health

Attractive man smilingMen are a lot more likely to skip the recommend twice-annual visit to the dentist than women are, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. In fact, most American men have admitted that they don’t visit the dentist unless they’re experiencing pain or some other type of dental problem. However, making sure to visit SpringRock Dental every six months for a checkup is a great way to avoid these dental problems altogether.

Preventative Care

Even if you’re practicing good oral hygiene at home, there are still things you might be missing by caring for your teeth on your own. Dentists are able to spot potential problems early on and fix them while they’re still painless and cheap to take care of. Additionally, neglecting your oral health can put your overall health at risk as well.

In general, men are at a higher risk of suffering from the following problems:

  • Gum disease – According to studies by both the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry, men are at a higher risk for developing gum disease than women. If gum disease goes left untreated, it can cause a number of health problems like heart disease, stroke, respiratory issues, diabetes, prostate problems, and cancer.
  • Oral cancer – Men are twice as likely to develop oral cancer than women are. If caught early enough, oral cancer treatment can be very successful. However, if you avoid the dentist for too long, cancer may be allowed to spread to other parts of the body, eventually causing death.
  • Advanced dental treatments – Since men are less likely to visit the dentist regularly, they’re more likely to require advanced treatment to fix problems once they eventually do visit the office. If tartar and plaque accumulate, an infection may occur which requires root canal therapy, or even extraction of the tooth. Once this happens, you may need restorations, which can be expensive.

Because men are at a higher risk of dental problems, it’s imperative that you visit the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and a checkup. To make an appointment here at SpringRock Dental, please contact our Aurora, Colorado family dental office today.
