Preparing Kids for the Do’s and Don’ts of Orthodontic Treatment
Before your child receives dental braces, it’s important to explain to him or her what to expect of orthodontic treatment! Being well-informed of their own treatment helps kids feel more confident, and more cooperative and willing to participate.
It’s important to explain to your child or teen that it may take a little while to get used to having dental braces. It can be an adjustment! However, even after your child becomes acclimated to the brackets and wires, he or she should still be committed to caring for their braces and their dental health for the remainder of their treatment.
Do’s & Don’ts of Orthodontic Treatment
Below are a few of the basic do’s and don’ts of orthodontic treatment to go over with your child and make sure he or she understands:
Oral Hygiene – Properly caring for oral hygiene is more important than ever during orthodontic treatment. This is because of the increased chance of getting food debris stuck in between brackets and wires. Make sure to ask your child’s orthodontist any questions you may have about proper oral hygiene habits.
Pain Management – In the days after having braces tightened, your child may suffer from soreness of the teeth. This pain can be alleviated by over the counter pain medication like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. If wires are causing the soft tissues of the mouth to become irritated, use a small piece of dental wax to cover the area.
Diet – There are certain foods to stay away from during orthodontic treatment. These foods include anything too hard or sticky, like taffy, hard candies, or even popcorn with the risk of un-popped kernels.
Breakages – Lastly, if brackets or wires become loose during treatment, please contact your child’s orthodontist right away so as not to delay treatment. Unreported breakages can cause the treatment duration to become extended, so make sure your child is doing his or her best to avoid them!
