Preventing Dry Sockets After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Woman with dry socket, tooth pain. A dry socket will begin once an adult tooth has been removed and the bone or nerve in the empty socket is suddenly exposed. During proper healing, a clot will form to protect the empty socket. If something happens to dislodge this clot, the area can become prone to infection, and this is what is known as a dry socket.

A certain amount of pain is expected after having teeth removed, especially wisdom teeth. But if the pain worsens, becomes unbearable, or begins to radiate towards the ear, it’s important to contact SpringRock Dental immediately.

Dry Socket Risk Factors

There are a few things that can put you at a higher risk of developing dry socket. Below are a few risk factors associated with dry sockets:

  • Have a history of dry sockets in the past
  • Smoke cigarettes or chew tobacco
  • Use hormonal birth control
  • Have a history of poor oral hygiene
  • Take blood-thinning medication

When you have a tooth extracted, please make sure to take any antibiotics or follow any instructions given to you by your dentist. These instructions will most likely include the following tips:

  • No smoking for 72 hours
  • No drinking from straws
  • No spitting or rinsing the mouth for 24 hours
  • Avoiding alcohol, crunchy foods, or warm beverages
  • Limiting physical activity for around 5 days
