Saving a Knocked-Out Tooth

Woman covering her mouthHaving a tooth knocked out can be painful and panic-inducing! However, there are ways for a knocked-out tooth to be saved and reinserted, but only if the proper steps are taken in a timely manner. Follow the instructions below to improve the chances that your tooth can be saved.

Saving a Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Located the tooth & store it properly – The first thing you should do when your tooth is knocked out is quickly locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown. The roots of the tooth should not be touched. The tooth should then be placed in a cup of milk, or cool water.
  • Keep the tooth moist – If the tooth dries out, it may become impossible to reattach. If possible, we recommend reinserting the tooth back into its socket. If the patient is too young and may choke, or if the injury is too painful to tolerate having the tooth in the socket, you can keep the tooth in a cup of milk or a cup of the patient’s saliva. Just make sure the entire tooth is immersed and kept moist.
  • Contact our office immediately – Next, make sure to contact our office as quickly as possible after the incident. If you’re able to be seen within an hour of losing the tooth, the odds of saving the tooth are much greater. The procedure to save the tooth will depend on the severity of the injury.

Having a tooth knocked out is a true dental emergency and should be treated as such.
